Japan's residential vacancy rate hits new high, reaching record high
The latest data released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications shows that as of October 2023, Japan's domestic residential vacancy rate climbed to 13.8%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from five years ago. The total number of vacant houses reached 8.99 million, an increase of 500,000 from five years ago.
Specific to each prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture and Tokushima Prefecture have the highest vacancy rates, both at 21.2%. In addition, Yamanashi Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture also have the highest vacancy rates, with 20.5%, 20.4% and 20.3% respectively.
The problem of residential vacancy is becoming increasingly serious, mainly related to the increase in old residential buildings in Japan. It is predicted that the number of residential buildings over 40 years old may increase 3.5 times in the next two decades.
